What the hell have we become? When does the madness stop?
Immigrants in Boston showed up to Faneuil Hall ready to swear the oath, after years of paperwork, vetting, and background checks, only to be pulled out of line and told they were not becoming citizens that day. People were reportedly pulled out of the Boston oath ceremony if they were from a group of 19 countries that the Trump administration labeled high risk such as Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela, Somalia, and Afghanistan as examples of nationalities whose applicants were stopped despite already being approved for citizenship. These people were singled out at the last minute, creating a climate of fear right at the threshold of what was supposed to be a celebration of belonging.
This is happening under a trump administration that keeps insisting it is only against illegal immigration while disrupting the lives of people who followed every rule on the books. When you target already approved applicants from specific nations and toss their futures back into limbo, that is not about process, it is about power and prejudice.
trumps rhetoric about being fine with legal immigration collapses the second his administration weaponizes bureaucracy against people who did everything by the law. Singling out nationals of certain countries for surprise cancellations and possible ICE scrutiny turns the naturalization system into a tool of racialized control, and it exposes his line about supporting legal immigrants as a bad faith lie.
