But some states are struggling more than others. Florida is now one of the most financially stressed states in the country, second only to another Southern state, according to a new report by WalletHub, which defines financial distress as having credit in forbearance or deferring payments due to financial difficulty.

Here are the five states struggling the most and why people there are having such a tough time.
The top 5 financially distressed states
Texas is the most financially distressed state in the country, followed by Florida, Louisiana, Nevada and South Carolina. The states that are best off? That honor goes to Hawaii, followed by Vermont, Alaska, Oregon and New Mexico.

(3,114 posts)I had the chance to move out of Texas before things really went to shit, but had to move back due to family issues. Would have preferred to stay where I had moved, and would love to move back, but it's on the west coast, so way out of our budget. Maybe if we win the megamillions or powerball, lol, we'll be able to move back.

Public facilities are not being reimbursed for their responses to the emergencies -- dating to hurricane Idalya (2023) and the three 2024 storms -- hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. Our Trumpster legislators are ignoring us.
No state can withstand the impact of both DeSantis and djt. Believe we're in worse shape than Texas.

(45,600 posts)Our homeowner's insurance has tripled in the last 3 years - despite us getting a new roof and not being in a flood zone. Then, when homes are damaged in hurricanes, the ins. cos pay them a fraction of what it will take to repair their home.
People cannot afford to insure their homes. Prices have been steadily rising, groceries in particular.
Tourism is down. Many FL communities depend on tourism revenue. A friend has neighbors who are Canadian snowbirds. They've been wintering here for years. They are selling their FL home because of how badly they've been treated since that thing in the White House started with his Canada hate (did I mention we're in MAGA world?).
Our schools are in the toilet; young families are moving out of state because they know the public education system is failing - another "devious" plan by Gov. Meathead and his minions.
When I say Florida is a hellmouth, I am not kidding.

Canadians don't even start coming down to Florida till late October/November.
Tourism is way down here, 60 miles north.
