I've developed a whole theory around this, which is: the hero's journey is a response to an instinctive impulse which myth and literature instructs us to follow because we have a choice whether to follow it. If we don't, we become like spoiled children, concerned only with our fears and appetites, seeking the bliss of innocence without first making the sacrifices to preserve that bliss for others. The hero's journey is a difficult path but the alternative is a life without meaning that causes harm to others.
