'Imminent defeat': Alarm sounded on 'dangerous' Trump triggers

Author/college professor Federico Finchelstein, who teaches at Lang College and the New School for Social Research in New York City, is known for focusing on authoritarian movements, past and present — which he does in his latest book, "The Wannabe Fascists: A Guide to Understanding the Greatest Threat to Democracy Federico Finchelstein." And he includes the United States in his list of countries he believes is under threat from the far right.

During an interview with Salon's Chauncey DeVega published in Q&A form on June 5, Finchelstein warned that President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement could become even more "dangerous" if he fears his agenda is in trouble.

"I am not shocked by the extremism of Trumpism," Finchelstein told DeVega. "But the Trump Administration has failed in many ways, and yet, it will keep trying to degrade American democracy as much as it can. A troubling question is: How will Trump and MAGA escalate their attacks on democracy and the rule of law to remain in power? I am very pessimistic in this regard. It is always more dangerous when totalitarians rule in the face of imminent defeat."

Finchelstein continued, "Trump has clearly not yet achieved that level of power — I emphasize 'yet.' This explains why Donald Trump and his administration and forces more broadly are not as bold as they could be in terms of advancing Trump's goal of destroying constitutional democracy…. My own view, an educated guess of sorts, is that we are in the middle, at least, of Trump's radicalization towards fascism."

With time, he becomes less feared and therefore less powerful. Especially if Republicans start suffering defeats, they will not stick by this loser as closely. It will still be a shitty four years though.

He may not survive the day, week, or month and when the reaper does claim him, there will be PLENTY of joy in Mudville once more.

More craven and less distracted.

Best case to me is Trump leaves without a successor and MAGA basically dies with him.

I am willing to endure anything to see him cold and stiff as soon as possible - I wake EVERYDAY hoping to see the blessed headline "Trump found dead on toilet, unsent nonsense on phone".

I'll worry about Vance and his predatory behavior around couches as necessary.

Vance is sharper and potentially worse on substance. That said, there is no way he'd command the loyalty of the GOP base. That's what makes Trump so powerful and dangerous.

When it does happen, I'm hoping it will be sudden, in full public view, and complete.

Double-entendre is deliberate.

A full-on coup attempt. He has a history. Most evil-doers do.

Since then, I noted that he and Putin are joined at the hip, or parts near there.

When one falls, so does the other.

The qualified people in our intelligence agencies. And like he put in a 22 year old doge kid with no knowledge and experience in charge of an important intelligence agency.

We can blame the orange taco for anything that occurs domestic terrorist wise.

Noem is fixated on the border and kidnapping nail salon technicians. Ignoring cyber security.

There is no intelligence because former allies don't trust the convicted felon and his henchmen.

Whatever happens will be as much of a surprise to the felon as it is surprising to ordinary Americans. Terror from domestic right-wing nazis and al queda types.

Everyone, especially the click-hungry media, will be so shocked that revenge will be foremost on their minds. Trump will exploit this to assume dictatorial powers. It will be blamed on whatever "other" is convenient at the time: "rag heads," migrants, homosexuals, chinese, jews, anything will do. It really doesn't matter because everyone will willingly give up all of their freedoms.

I'll never forget Dan Rather, of all people, getting sucked into it after 9/11. On an appearance on the 9/17 Letterman show (the first after the 24/7 media coverage of 9/11 started to diminish,) Rather pledged to "line up like a good soldier behind President Bush to be used in any way possible to help with the forthcoming war effort." Rather also referred to the need to remove Saddam Hussein from power and the mistake it was not to remove him in the first Gulf War.
