Trump Rescinds Biden Policy Requiring Hospitals to Provide Emergency Abortions
At issue is how to interpret a federal law barring hospitals from turning away poor or uninsured patients.
By Sheryl Gay Stolberg
June 3, 2025 Updated 7:21 p.m. ET

The Trump administration announced on Tuesday that it had revoked a Biden administration requirement that hospitals provide emergency abortions to women whose health is in peril, including in states where abortion is restricted or banned.

The move by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a branch of the department led by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was not a surprise. But it added to growing confusion around emergency care and abortions since June 2022, when the Supreme Court rescinded the national right to abortion by overturning Roe v. Wade.

“It basically gives a bright green light to hospitals in red states to turn away pregnant women who are in peril,” Lawrence O. Gostin, a health law expert at Georgetown University, said of the Trump administration’s move.

The administration did not explicitly tell hospitals that they were free to turn away women seeking abortions in medical emergencies. Its policy statement said hospitals would still be subject to a federal law requiring them to provide reproductive health care in emergency situations. But it did not explain exactly what that meant.

Mr. Gostin and other experts said the murky policy could have dire consequences for pregnant women by discouraging doctors from performing emergency abortions in states where abortions are banned or restricted.

1. It's the MAGA Murder Regime

It's not just the MAGA Murder Budget, this is the MAGA Murder Regime!

Even if we somehow manage to stop the worst of the MAGA Murder Budget, the tragedy for the nation is that the 47 regime is the MAGA murder regime. And they just keep making that reality clearer and clearer.

This is an intentional sentence of death for too many women (and even one easily avoidable death is too many) contending with a pregnancy gone wrong. The cruelty and immorality of unnecessarily turning a terrible, but medically manageable situation into a life threatening one is beyond comprehension.

Was it not enough to kill starving children with the criminal (both morally and legally) end of USAID? Is it not enough to destroy our ability to forecast weather and thereby put people at unnecessary risk of death in an extreme weather event?

Yes. 47's MAGA regime is the Murder Regime.

And they don't care that they are killing people. Ernst said it: We're all gonna die. From that POV, it just doesn't matter that segments of the American population -- and the world population -- are targeted and picked off first.

3. Sanctuaries for pregnant women

Where women can live during their pregnancy in blue states so they will get proper medical care in case of emergency. A network of volunteers willing to house them. It could be done.

…that had to be treated with emergency surgery and a hospital stay. I was old enough to remember Grandma coming to stay with my brother and me while Mama was in the hospital — I learned the details later.

My point is that “emergencies” generally come with no warning.

That’s why (ideally) pregnant women should live in places where they don’t have to travel far for proper care. What the f*** is wrong with this country.

No emergency abortion means BOTH mother and embryo/fetus will perish. It IS an EMERGENCY.
