In 2023, the latest year with available data, an estimated 325 million people visited national parks, monuments, and historic sites, spending around $26.4 billion in nearby communities. That number grew even higher the following year, with park visits reaching an all-time record of nearly 332 million, per the article by Ted Kerasote, a nature and wildlife writer.
Theresa Pierno, president of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), an advocacy organization, cautioned last month that the park system "would be completely decimated" if the proposed cuts go into effect.
"Even before he took office, the Park Service was running lean, on a slim operating budget of about $3 billion. But since January, an estimated 13 percent of its staff has departed through pressured buyouts, early retirements and deferred resignations," the Times piece noted.

(2,344 posts)My only theory as to why he would be doing this is that it can be turned over to private businesses to run the parks and profit off them.

(5,044 posts)Very little federal land, very little state land. Growing up there I often heard that government should not own land except military bases and a few government buildings.
After the fall of the Soviet Union state assets including land were sold off to oiligarchs. During Trump's first administration there were rumblings of a policy of selling off federal parks. I think that we can expect to see that ramped up.

healthier lifestyles and therefore lower health care costs.
Even the most MAGA of companies (United Healthcare e.g.) understands people getting off their asses and call phones is good for business. I am approaching the point where I might need knee replacements, and that is despite an active lifestyle of sports and regular hiking. I have Medicare and a Supplement from UHC. If I had both knee joints replaced, UHC would probably have to cover about $5000. Instead of going straight for that, I opted for PT. I did about 12 sessions, and that probably cost UHC about $700. There was progress, but slow, so I explored a gym membership where I could manage my own rehab. UHC is happy to pay for this. It probably costs them $300-ish per year, and avoids or delays the surgery. Moreover, the work I am doing at the gym could lower other HC costs. UHC sees that as a no-brainer. And the use of national parks should be just as obvious a no-brainer.
