Coffee Shrinkage: 10.5 is the new 12

I went to the store today to pick up some coffee and noticed that the Peet's brand shrunk from 12oz bags to 10.5oz, and that 12.5% reduction was quite noticeable in the bag. I picked it up and immediately felt the weight reduction, especially when comparing it to the Lavazza bags right next to it.

No wonder why they were on sale. Get the people to buy it and become accustomed to the shrinkage.

The company hasn't been family-owned for decades.

Since 2012, they've been owned by JAB Holding Company S.à r.l., a German conglomerate.

out Tim Hortons. I was also a Major Dickason's fan (caffeinated), but found that Tim Hortons is very good and switched over to them (I am NOT a coffee connoisseur, so keep that in mind). I've tried several blends, all have been enjoyable, but none were decaf. However, the only way for me to order it is through Amazon, so there's that.

This is what popped up on the site you linked to for Tim Hortons...

Publix had BOGO recently, so I stocked up a bit. It was still 12 oz i think. I stopped buying 8 o'clock when they went to 11 oz and then discovered Tim hortons.

I tried about a dozen of the "best" decaf coffees that were listed on various sides, including ones that were $20 a bag. They all sucked, except for Major Dickason's Decaf. I should be drinking decaf, but I ventured back to regular when it's not on the store shelf or not on sale.

...and not just Peet's brand. Starbucks has been doing something similar, but right now it''s only happening with some of their specialty blends and single-origin coffees. So their Sumatran and Brazilian coffees come in 10.5 ounce bags, whereas most of their other products are still 12 ounces. At least that's how it was last time I checked.

The other thing that just about every coffee company is doing is reducing their K-Cup packages from 12 to 10 K-cups. In fact, that is so commonplace, it's difficult to find any boxes of K-Cups that still come with a dozen.

When I was a kid, my parents wouldn't have stood for this dishonest practice we now call shrinkflation. My parents, along with the entire country, boycotted coffee when corporations tried to shrink the packaging and jack up the prices. We just drank tea until business agreed to lower prices and restore the size of the coffee cans.
It's time for us to quit being spoiled and fight back against those business cheats.

I get a 5 quart pot, bring it to boil and then turn it off. Put in 5 tea bags and let it steep until cool. I have a 1 gallon Arizona Ice Tea container that I clean and refill with my brew and put in the fridge. Poof a gallon of iced tea for pennies. I'm switch things up by using 4 black tea bags and add a flavored tea bag, such as lemon or peach to give a hint of flavor at times.

Morning coffee, iced tea during the day and water at night.

The corporations that process and package food products try to keep prices in the grocery store steady as long as they can, and sometimes the only way they can do it is shrink the product. The customer isn’t shocked by abrupt price increases, but sooner or later they do notice it weighs less.

You and I may not like it, but it is what it is. Currently, trump is what it is.

There are certain staples like coffee and bananas that do not grow well in the continental US, and Hawaii’s production of same is much too small to sate the appetites of the Mainland market.

Our current dilemma is 99% caused by trump and nobody else — but in the end will be exacerbated by global warming.

… but it’s getting worse.

I’m still pissed that I can hardly find my Arizona energy drinks—and that big can they swore would never increase in price from $0.99? They seem to be phasing them out in favour of a plastic bottle with a third as much in it, for $1.29…

Started in premium brands and I guess it's moved to the middle grades now. The smarter brands move to new baggage that puffs up to hide that missing 2oz.

It sucks because I was already grinding my own to save money.. Thanks Krasnov.

because "10.5" is a strange size to pick. In the UK, the standard size has remained 227 grams, for years, which is really 8 oz. I assumed this was because the US still dominated the coffee packaging industry, though if 12 oz is the standard US size, not 8 oz, then maybe there are other reasons.
