They use to be a great company until they hired a ruthless consulting firm. Had one of the highest satisfaction ratings and have dropped, big time. Now its the 3 Ds deny, delay and decline. Agents now try to install fear in their customers by always spouting worst case possibilities.
Time to switch.

(129,150 posts)We used to call it State Fraud when we were trying to get it to pay clients' claims and it stonewalled or offered a pittance. This was 30-some years ago.

(54,075 posts)Is the system of insurance adjusters, which hold insurers to their contracts, still viable? Or has that gone mercenary too?

(3,473 posts)Friends have had good luck, but I haven't switched yet. Not the cheapest, though.
Safeco used to be good (tho also not the cheapest). Was purchased by Liberty Mutual and went downhill. Except their rates. Their rates did not go downhill.

(28,640 posts)Moving back to KY from CA, I had an accident in Albuquerque. State Farm paid for damage to my horse trailer, but refused to pay for damage to my truck. The local agent here was a real snot about it too.

Similar action in healthcare, education, etc.

(44,738 posts)A handful of claims in that time and handled judiciously in my opinion. We got a new agent six years ago. He told us if we had a wreck or any other claim to call him not St Farm. Otherwise he could do nothing for us. Any feedback on that plan? Sounds like a mystery but fortunately we havent needed them since Katrina.

(37,017 posts)and was thrilled with the way they handled it.
Then a few years ago the had a Drive Safety deal that I signed up for. Put a sensor in my car, but that wasnt good enough. Then they wanted me to report my mileage every few months. I havent had an accident in 50 years or a ticket. More and more hoops to jump thru and my premiums just kept going up.
Then they hired
Then then they hired McKencie Consulting.

(11,798 posts)A guy in a Ford pickup in the left lane decided to get to a head in parking space as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, my left front fender was between his truck and the parking space.
A couple of days later his State Farm agent called. They were going to cover the damage to my car, and asked if I had been injured. I hadnt, but he offered a little money to take it off the table, and said hed send a check and a release.
When I got it, the release covered both personal injury AND property damage. I really didnt care about the PI release, because I hadnt been injured, but I wanted my car fixed! I called him and asked if he really thought I was going to sign that release.
He denied that it covered property damage, and sputtered that no one had questioned his honesty in the 40 years hed been an agent. I told him I had learned to read even before going to law school, and read him the offending passage, whereupon it got very quiet on the other end of the line.
I redrafted the release, signed it, mailed it back to him, and cashed the check. State Farm did fix my fender without further issues. I still dont know if he had just made a mistake, or if he really tried to screw me over $3000-4000.

(7,315 posts)Re-insurance companies have been pulling back, thus forcing your standard insurance companies to do the same.
I went to Nationwide to see what they had in product/pricing/analytics, the link was no longer active. On Linkedin, a product analyst position will have over 100 applicants. No company is looking to grow outside of auto. There have been mass layoffs and quiet firings/forced retirement everywhere. It's no longer about growth but, shrinking your footprint.
New positions and titles have emerged...Catastrophe Analysts. They are all trying to price for more global climate change issues but don't know how just yet. Too many wake up calls in the insurance industry so they are taking measures to figure it out. The GOP spent ages trying to deny this was happening, well, its happening to everyone's wallet now.

(9,019 posts)State Farm ranks 3rd in satisfaction behind Erie & ACG (AAA)
US NEWS & World Report published new rankings just 3 weeks ago with State Farm coming in at #4 behind USAA, Auto-Owners & Nationwide
Forbes latest rankings put Sate Farm at #4, behind Progressive, Geico & Allstate.
The Zebra rates State Farm as Best company for most drivers
Among carriers that offer nationwide coverage, State Farm scored the highest at 8.3/10, doing particularly well for claims and customer service.
It seems State Farm still scores very high on most rankings and there is no remote consensus about any other insurance companies.

(378 posts)Yes, the 3 D's are exactly correct. We are now in a fight with State Farm regarding damage to our roof. We have car and home insurance with State Farm and have for 30+ years. Initially, a representative inspected our roof and promised we would get what we thought was a fair amount to cover the damage. Then, they sent another person out to inspect again and said we would get nothing. We are now considering a lawsuit. Not really sure what to do. Do we change insurance companies? Maybe, AAA? It's really frustrating!

(53,368 posts)Suddenly they did an inspection and decided our house needed a paint job and cancelled the policy. How stupid can a company be? We don't even live in a hazard-prone area. We bought a policy from another insurer for about the same price with the same coverage.
