I noticed the other day that a lot of folks do not like AARP. I find their publications very informative. I get a phone bill AARP discout using Consumer Cellular. I get a big break on car insurance using The Hartford. I don't use AARP for my health insurance. I get BCBS of Michigan PPO Medicare Advantage. Reading the previous comments, many folks buy supplemental insurance instead of using a Medicare Advantage plan. Good for them. Seeing how much folks pay is not what many folks can afford. The price is way too high for many of us. All I see are attacks, with no understanding of why folks pick what is best for them. Sad.

(45,661 posts)We've also gotten some decent travel discounts.
We use AARP/United Health for our Medicare supplemental and we've been happy with it.
I do find useful information in the publications as well.

Especially agree on Medicare Advantage and people who would love to take it away from those who find it works best for them.

(98,883 posts)I have supplemental with UHC, have taken advantage of some discounts on glasses, etc.
No one is forced to buy an Advantage Care plan, a supplemental plan, or even Medicare A/B.
There are a lot of folks who cannot afford premiums on a supplemental plan, or even the Medicare Part B premium, let alone a Rx plan. An Advantage Plan works for them because they couldn't afford it otherwise, and having insurance is better than nothing.
This doesn't mean it is all perfect, it isn't, but unless there is something like a Medicare for All, and that isn't likely to happen anytime soon, this is what we have. Because the STUPID American public voted for a conman, racist, sexist, and bigot into the WH for the second time, we will be lucky if we are even able to keep what we have now.
Most every single insurer pushes their Advantage Care plans, it isn't just UHC.
and just to make it very clear, AARP is NOT an insurance company.
Some of the remarks in that thread have no basis. AARP is not a right wing republican organization, and republicans have gone after AARP various times through the years because AARP has been consistent in lobbying against any cuts in Social Security and Medicare. It is the largest lobbying group for older Americans in the country, and the most important thing, no one is forced to join it.
As far as the frustration of phone calls or email solicitations, don't answer calls from numbers you don't recognize is the solution, and that is what you Spam folder is for. I can tell you I get far more solicitations for money from politicians and various progressive groups I have never heard of then I do from AARP.
As with everything, people should do what is in their best interest, and not cut off their nose to spite their face.
When republicans gained control of the House, and were looking for a new speaker, a lot of people here were pushing that Hakeem Jeffries should not save McCarthy, which we could have done, and in retrospect, we should have, because Johnson is far worse than McCarthy ever would be. I use this as an example of unintended consequences.
People need to determine what is best for their own situation.

(6,564 posts)is that many believe AARP started as a lobbying organization for Seniors. A fiesty older woman began speaking of no representation for them back in the 60s or so. Wish I could remember her name. Then AARP was formed supposedly to lobby. However one of the founders was an insurance executive and it quickly began selling the new Medicare plans. So people, like me, wanted a strong group to support Senior issues, when in truth, it does a little of that, but mainly sells health insurance. I think the time has come for a strong group focusing on seniors. Not the hybrid we have.
