Cantaloupe-size hail keeps bombarding Texas

Some of the hailstones are more than six inches in diameter.

Mammoth hail keeps pelting parts of Central Texas.

Cantaloupe-size hail — approximately six inches in diameter — was recovered following rotating supercell thunderstorms earlier this week. One of the stones that fell in Menard, Texas, was 5.87 inches across and was picked up by a team of researchers conducting a hail study field mission. While it just missed this threshold, the technical term for six-inch hail is “gargantuan” (yes, really).

A year ago this week, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Lubbock issued the first-ever “DVD-size hail” warning, corresponding to stones at least 4.75 to 5 inches in diameter.

Hail that large is difficult to detect on radar. Unless forecasters receive real-time reports from storm chasers or the public, most warnings are usually for softball-size (four inches in diameter) or grapefruit-size (4.5 inches in diameter) hail.

Sunday’s biggest hailstones fell in Afton, Texas — about 70 miles east-northeast of Lubbock. The storm chasers who found them estimated they weighed nearly a pound and a half each.

It’d be something if one of those hail rocks hit Abbott, Paxton, Cruz and Cronyn.

Pock marks on roofs and hoods.
Glad I didn't get hit by those. Probably broke windows.
A friend in Denver had to replace his roof 2 times in 3 years from hail.

of Texas. Will never go there, EVER. I have no need to chat with the many racist republicants there. Then there's always Ted Cruz and Abbott. Yet more reasons not to go there.

Mine is 24 gauge and hail, wind and fire resistant. I just had 2 vehicles totaled by hail last week yet my roof still looks fine. As to cell reception I have no issues there, but I have a ton of windows in my home. Many of the windows are covered by a wraparound porch (ranch style), which means there's metal roofing above them. It's also pretty and in a color which matches the trim and doors of my home. It looks nice.

Just as a FYI if you're interested.

Where I’m at, I have now purchased a class 4 roof.
My insurance here is very high. I’m in some kind of geographical anomaly where we are getting hit by hail more that the surrounding area. My insurance is through the roof!

They were both fairly short-term, but very intense.

One had hail, and caused power outages.

My area faired very well. The power came back on in a few
minutes and there was no signifant damage.

Other areas got it worse.

Strange storms, these days.
