(174,973 posts)Ukraine says at least 40 Russian warplanes hit in massive drone strikes

According to a statement from Ukraine's security service, SBU, "enemy strategic bombers are burning en masse in Russia".
The SBU says Ukraine is conducting "a large-scale special operation aimed at destroying enemy bomber aircraft."
Dramatic footage has emerged purportedly showing a drone attack at Belaya airbase in Irkutsk oblast, Siberia, thousands of miles from Ukraine.
Russia's military has not commented on the issue.

According to SBU sources, Ukraine's Security Service conducted a special operation called "Pautyna" ("Spiderweb"
The operation was personally overseen by President Volodymyr Zelensky, with execution led by SBU chief Vasyl Maliuk and his team.
The mission involved complex logistics:
FPV drones were first smuggled into Russian territory
Later, mobile wooden sheds were also transported in
The drones were hidden under the roofs of these sheds, which were placed on cargo trucks
At the designated time, the roofs opened remotely and the drones launched, targeting military airfields and aircraft
SBU sources emphasize that all personnel involved in the operation are already back in Ukraine, so any future arrests by Russian authorities would likely be for domestic propaganda purposes.

(8,299 posts)Ukraine is smarter, braver, more innovative. Ukrainians are not targeting random Russian civilians, they are going after Putin's ability to wage war of aggression. Such a people are to be supported.

(21,551 posts)Along with more modern TU-22M's!, better known in the West by their NATO designation, Backfire bombers. The Russian version of the US B-2.. Also some super expensive A-50 early warning aircraft. Roughly the Russian equivalent of US AWACS. Billions upon Billions of USD gone up in flames.
They even hit Olenya Airbase way up in Murmansk! Near the border with Finland and Norway. If they're controlling the drones in real time, Ukrainian assets are way, way, waaaaay deep in Russian territory or they're doing some interesting stuff with EU orbital defense systems. Probably the later. I doubt they'd be allowed to do that using US assets. Real time drone control is line of sight, unless you're using aircraft or satellites to relay the control feed and return feed. All the way up in the Murmansk region means satellites. Huge, huge escalation. I'd say the Europeans threw down the gauntlet.

(12,388 posts)Ukrainians should be our North Star in what resistance really looks like. Not advocating importing all-out war to the US but the grit and Ukrainian determination to remain free is nothing short of stellar.
Ukraine was given no chance in this fight at the beginning. The three-week invasion/capitulation that Putin predicted has stretched out to three years of steady push back. In actuality, the war started in 2014 when Putin seize Crimea and sent paramilitaries into eastern Donbas.
The future of Ukraine is uncertain but the country is still standing, still fighting and sacrificing to claim its sovereignty and right to exist.
Once we turn the ugly page on our own current political chaos, I certainly hope we turn back to Ukraine because they have proven themselves (a thousand times over) as the sort of ally we should want and admire.
Never forget, never forgive.

As much as a third of Russias nuclear bomber fleet was destroyed. No new bombers have been produced for some time, and there are no facilities to produce them. This has serious implications for the nuclear balance between Russia and the United States.
The nuclear balance is maintained when both sides can credibly destroy the other in a return attack. Both sides rely on three types of delivery vehicles for that second strike capability: land-based ICBMs, submarines, and bombers. The land-based ICBMs would go first, both offensively and defensively. Their locations and requirements for destruction are known, so they would be the first to be fired and the first to be destroyed.

For those of us contemplating this from our place in front of a consumer-quality computer, it seems like it shouldnt make a big difference. But the military makes calculations of deterrence effects, and those calculations have now changed. Whether forcing that change was escalatory is not clear; we will eventually hear from Russia about that, mostly in what they do. My own judgment is that they will not escalate to the use of nuclear weapons. What else they do is open, although they now have fewer planes to do it with.
