(292,890 posts)The former U.S. leader visited with King Harald V, the King's daughter-in-law Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at the Bygdø Kongsgård royal summer estate in Bygdøyveien on Tuesday, May 13.
The visit came as Obama was in Norway for a lecture at the Oslo Spektrum on Monday, May 12. Moderated by Sofie Høgestøl, a podcaster and former member of Norwegian parliament, the discussion delved into some of the most pressing issues of our time, as well as his thoughts on the challenges facing the world's democracies in the future.
Obama and King Harald were well acquainted during his time in office. The monarch presented the former president with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his efforts in international diplomacy.

(105,581 posts)[excerptThe King will host French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife this summer on their first state visit to the UK.
Buckingham Palace announced the president has accepted the King's invitation and will visit from 8-10 July.
Mr Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, will stay at Windsor Castle.
...
But after reports last month that Emmanuel Macron may get a state visit first, it has now been confirmed that the French President and his wife will be heading to Windsor Castle before the US President.

(129,127 posts)However, King Harald has very little actual power per the Norwegian Constitution; he isn't anything like the absolute monarch Trump would love to be. Most European hereditary monarchs are basically mascots and symbols of their particular countries - usually loved and respected as such, but their countries' parliaments run the show. Trump's interest in this particular king over the other remaining eight or nine European kings probably arises from the fact that the Norwegian parliament selects the members of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee and Trump probably figures the king could pull some strings for him (not that he would). Note also that Trump met recently with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, along with the Finance Minister, Jens Stoltenberg (the recent head of NATO). While Norway is almost as rich as Dubai, it's not a world power, and I can't think why Trump would want a special meeting with its top officials except for the purpose of sucking up. Trump wants that Peace Prize desperately - not just for the prestige, but because Obama got one.
