DNC panel finds Hogg and another official weren't properly elected to leadership

I have been active in state and county politics for a while. There is a rule that for each position such as representative to the state party executive committee from each congressional district or each major party affiliate group, there needs to be one male and one female (in the case of LGBTQ individuals, they get to decide which slot to run for). This rule was violated when both Malcom Kenyatta and David Hogg were elected when there was female also running.

DNC panel finds Hogg and another official weren’t properly elected to leadership

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/05/12/hogg-dnc-leadership-election-vote/

A Democratic National Committee panel found that David Hogg and another vice chair were not properly elected this year, setting off a process that could lead to Hogg’s ouster amid backlash to his plans to support primary challengers to House Democrats.

The Credentials Committee’s recommendation will get a vote from the full DNC membership. If approved, the two vice chair elections will be invalidated, and new elections will be held as soon as practicable. The new elections will be limited to the same five candidates who were eligible at the February vote.

The challenge to the election was filed more than two months ago — before Hogg’s announcement about primary challenges — by Kalyn Free, an Oklahoma activist who unsuccessfully sought one of the vice chair slots in the Feb. 1 election. She argued the DNC broke its rules on gender diversity in party officer elections, invalidating the election of Hogg and a second vice chair, Malcolm Kenyatta.......

“I am disappointed to learn that before I became Chair, there was a procedural error in the February Vice Chair elections. The Credentials Committee has issued their recommendation, and I trust that the DNC Members will carefully review the Committee’s resolution and resolve this matter fairly,” Martin said in a statement. “I thank all of our officers for their service, including Vice Chairs Kenyatta and Hogg, and look forward to continuing to work with them in their officer posts as this matter is resolved.”

Kenyatta said Monday night that framing the vote around Hogg is “nonsense” and that the story is not about Hogg “even though he clearly wants it to be.” He touted his own accomplishments as vice chair and said the committee’s decision was “a slap in my face.”

If the vote had been counted properly, Kenyatta and Ms. Free would have been the proper Vice Chairs. Now we will have fresh elections and will follow the party rules

The same people that think it's some conspiracy to """rig""" everything against David Hogg would still be complaining if this had been done a month ago.

Some people are going to complain about the party regardless. That is the only absolute here.

If Hogg is supported by enough DNC members, he will win the second vote as well; if he's not, then he won't. Either way, it will be up to the voters.

but this seems like a bad move. The party is floundering, IMO.

I was disgusted with how many piled on after the election & criticized Harris & her campaign. WTF? She had 90 days & kicked ass. What man has ever campaigned under the circumstances she did? Not a goddamned one! Then when Biden came out & said he likely would have won the election, I changed to nonaffiliated. And I was a Biden supporter until he decided to step out of the race, but IMO he would have lost by even more. Last week I googled how dems had voted on Trump's nominees & surprise, surprise, Senators Hickenlooper & Bennet were both big enablers. Arghhh!

The party needs to ditch this old guard play-it-safe strategy. IDK if Hogg is leadership material, but pushing him out over this issue seems like a convenient way for party leadership to get rid of someone they simply disagree with. I'll still vote democratic, but the party has seen the last money from me.

responded to much sooner. All of this would have been avoided.

I understand frustration with the party, but I also see Dems standing up and doing things when they can. I don’t really remember the last time we were a complete minority party, and I see members freaking out over things we can’t actually change right now.

But while I agree we need some new voices and leadership may need to work harder to train and raise up these voices…. I do NOT want to see a widespread elevation of the Social Dems, Just Dems, or Our Revolution. I do not appreciate their “both sides are the same” rhetoric, for one thing.

Procedural Question - Were the DNC Rules technically applied correctly?

*February 1st – DNC has the Vice Chair Vote

*February 28th – Kayln Free submits her challenge to the results Very clear that the two men were allowed to be voted on twice – whereas the three women were only allowed to be voted on once. The two men start with a +400 vote advantage to reach the 200 votes needed to be selected chair.

*April 15/16 – David Hogg announces his Super Pac with a $20M to primary Democrats in safe seats.

*April 28th - Kalyn Free advised her argument would be heard on May 12th.

*May 12th - The hearing occurs. The new members will all vote in August. Kenyatta and Hogg keep their seats until that time.

The DNC Violated the parliamentary rules. There was to be one woman, one man, and one of either gender.

The first ballot: Not enough votes to meet the threshold

Second ballot: Ms. Blanco gets picked.

Third ballot: There should have been TWO lines. One for two men, and One for any gender. That didnt' happen. The three women had to compete with fewer votes - as the men's votes were counted twice.

In August there will be another vote where the ballot will be corrected.

I don't LMV? Maybe the women of color who had a smaller pool of votes on a five person ballot should just sit down, shut up, and not speak up for themselves because it might hurt some man's feelings?

I was going to do this as an op - but decided we should get all of the facts together in one thread.

Malcolm is the one getting screwed here, but everyone is whining about David Hogg because it generates more press and serves to divide Democrats.

Malcolm got more votes than Hogg, so he should keep his seat and Hogg's spot should be opened up to another vote where a woman can be chosen (per DNC bylaws). But -- completely opposite of what all the whiners say -- Democrats are all too willing to bend over backwards to appease those that will happily shiv us in the back and it has come back to haunt us again. So, Malcolm has to be put up for another vote even though he clearly deserves the position over Hogg based on the previous vote.

For 50 years we've had gender equity in the DNC Leadership and Vice Chairs.

Kenyatta and Hogg were supposed to be in the pick one man block.

The one who got fewer votes then should have had to duke it out with the three women.

I guess the party rank and file aren't pro women.

She's doing this for all three women.

Justice is never swift - especially for Black, Indigenous, Asian etc etc women of color. Kalyn Free worked in the DOJ Prosecuting federal environmental laws in particular regarding tribal lands. First Indigenous Supervising Attorney in the DOJ. Youngest atty ever hired by the DOJ.

Minority women in our 50's and early 60's - NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITIES that young white men had in the 80's and 90's - AND today. The game of America is rigged in their favor.

She worked hard to get onto that ballot. She busted her fucking ass. She deserves an election where the rules of fair play are followed.

She was not going to slap dash together a shit sandwich. She measured five times - and then she cut.

And I'd bet you anything Men were whispering "Don't do this while Trump is in office".

There's no better time to challenge anything than while Trump is in office.
