No sir, I don't like it.
Christian Reconstructionists want to dismantle public education and replace modern ideas about family with a patriarchal family model because they claim that biblical law requires both. They believe that Old Testament biblical law applies to todays society and to everyone, whether or not they are Christian. For them, all of life is religious; there is no separation between religion and politics.

(10,834 posts)I still say women who are not already happily married (and/or with kiddos), should forego dating, sex, marriage, and domestic life other than alone with their financial independence - until American men learn to respect women as human beings, not just state-owned breeding livestock and sperm receptacles for men to dump their junk into. Either the laws change to protect their human rights-- or no dating, sex, marriage, or kids, and don't be afraid to say this is the reason - loudly.
Women have the power. They should USE it.
Of course, that may mean never marrying or having kids since this will take a LOT of time, so there's that. This is why I insist every woman should work and have financial independence so she doesn't need to depend on someone else financially.
The American Taliban is trying to take that away by shoving women out of the workforce and out of good-paying jobs, too - and this is why they're trying to do that.
They hate women. They especially hate financially independent, self-respecting women because they are hard to impossible to control.
Women SHOULD be hard (impossible) for men and the patriarchy to control. That should, in my opinion, be one of their top objectives.

(1,543 posts)Men aren't about to give up their privileges to meet women even halfway. Younger women especially are seeing the rigged game society is just as I did over 50 years ago and see what women have to do to get that "better lifestyle" partnering with a man. They are also recognizing that going life solo will almost certainly result in poverty in old age, all blather about "careers" notwithstanding. However, they don't think marriage and family offer anything but a lifetime of walking on eggshells. Younger women especially are seeing there is really nothing in it for them despite all the bennies of marriage, all of which require they exchange sexual access by men to get them.

(10,834 posts)You can get a rollover IRA at Fidelity to keep your employer retirement plan money in as you change employers. Always take advantage of employer plans, even if you can only pay a small amount into the plan each paycheck. Every bit adds up. Don't be afraid to talk to a financial advisor, no matter your situation. Women need this more than men - starting earlier is better. They must learn to advocate for themselves. Ask for a CFP specializing in advising women, or at least a CFP.
If you can, save money regularly in a savings account, credit union, or money market (liquid, emergency money). Autotransfer a certain amount from a checking account into savings biweekly or monthly every paycheck - even if it's only $5. If you need the money, cancel the transfer for a couple of weeks or a month, but keep that money going into savings.
Pay yourself first, then pay the bills. Don't keep a balance on credit cards, either. Pay them off each month. Maybe there's nothing left. Maybe there is. It's not fun or easy, but it's necessary.
Nothing is foolproof, especially with mediocre, unqualified white males dictating economic policy and running the gov't, but do what you can.
The idea is that no man or patriarchal society or government can control women. Independence is the absolute best revenge for women. Be fierce about it! FIERCE. Be a bitch. Seriously.
Never share account or financial information (amount in your accounts, where you bank, investments, credit card info) with any manor anybody. If you need a backup person, choose a sister, mom, or someone elsenever a man. Need beneficiaries? Choose a favorite charity, animal rights group, women's group, or independent publicly funded media.

(1,543 posts)You can save all the money you want, but unless you are in public employment and have access to a pension and a 403b or are a high-paid professional like a doctor or a lawyer, financial security for never-married women is a pipedream and always will be. It is all by design.
There are things that happen during one's life including job/career loss and health issues, both of which can wipe out a lifetime of savings. There is also age discrimination, which is rampant past age 50. I know this from personal experience. "Owning" a house is basically out of reach for never-married women unless they belong to one of the categories mentioned above or have an inheritance from parents or other relatives. Marriage is still the primary means for upward mobility for women in our society.
Our country heavily subsidizes marriage and the lifestyle that goes with it. This is most glaringly obvious in tax laws and especially Social Security benefits. Women who have been widowed and those divorced who have been married at least 10 years can get full survivor benefits from their deceased husbands or ex-husbands. This can be very substantial, certainly in comparison to most women's SS benefits from working. All they did is literally trade sex to get the bennies in the first place. Never-married women have access to nothing but their own earnings, which typically pale compared to men's. I know mine are a fraction of what women I know who have been married get. That isn't right at all.

(1,543 posts)had a background in education, had a degree or two in it, and was actually a teacher earlier in his life. He is the one chiefly responsible for pushing the notion of "homeschooling" on the public. This push is not motivated by the desire to help kids; rather, it is a scheme to force women back into the home and out of the labor force. This despite the fact the economy has moved long past a one-earner household and the fact women being voluntarily unemployed (which is what being a "housewife" or "homemaker" is) leaves women extremely vulnerable to poverty if the husband leaves or dies.
Wilson talking about sex reveals the whole mindset behind marriage. Wives, like women in prostitution, are things to be used. Marriage always was the flip side of prostitution and always will be. To get the bennies, the marriage has to be "consummated" or else one party can sue for divorce. Men as a group have always rigged society so they can get sexual access to women, and the easiest way to do it is threaten women with starvation by hoarding resources. Women are coerced into trading the sexual use of their bodies for economic support.

(5,038 posts)I don't think any of the Democrats on the committee brought this up during questioning, did they? They only focused on his drinking and sexual abuse. I'm not saying those issues aren't very important. But his political/theological beliefs seem to me very relevant.

(1,543 posts)throughout history. Your personal experience and individual experiences do not invalidate the truth of that statement. If her statement weren't true, and I think deep down you know it is, there would be no such thing as rape including rape during wartime. There would be no such thing as prostitution or surrogacy or pornography or child marriages or forced marriages, dowries, mail-order brides, etc., etc., etc. Women wouldn't be coerced into obsessing over their safety if they are alone for any reason because "men can't help themselves." They wouldn't be forced out of the public sphere as they are in Afghanistan. Of course MacKinnon is right.
It is a rape mentality, and don't think for one minute that mentality isn't common. It has been the rule throughout history. Hell, millions and millions of people today don't believe there is such a thing as marital rape because marriage is seen as implied consent.

(12,540 posts)There are too many Americans who truly believe they are entitled (by God or otherwise) to enjoy the fruits of the free labor of others. It is the foundation for much of the deeply pervasive racism and sexism in America.
