How often does your family eat chicken? Have you read the ingredients in you dog's kibble? Chicken for the table and chicken meal for pet food will increase costs considerable. Then, when chicken prices go up, other meats will go up.

Oh, and the price of lentils has increase a lot lately.

"This winter, the virus has spread beyond poultry, spilling into dairy herds. Hundreds of infected herds have been linked to contaminated raw milk, which spreads through farmers' clothing, equipment, and other animals shared between farms."

One would think barn raised chickens would be safer but sanitation is a problem.

66. Barn raised can be worse
Sun Jan 26, 2025, 06:21 PM
Sunday

Commercial poultry facilities (factory farms) are horrible for the health of the chickens. They're crammed into small cages, the air is dusty, the feces pile up under the cage rows so the air often reeks of ammonia. The health of the birds can be marginal at best. So any kind of 'bug' that comes by finds a population just waiting to be infected without strong resistance to them.

I know that these facilities vary from state to state, some worse than others. So the above doesn't apply to all of the farms. But if you just think about the numbers killed that are being talked about--hundreds of millions--those are not cage free birds roaming around nice green pastures. Just by logistics they have to be crammed in together in endless cage rows in barns to manage those kinds of numbers.

Can spread it. Wild birds are around chicken farms, small songbirds get in and out of the sheds quite easily, some migrate.

At our county seat their is a quiet pigeon eradication going on as the town pigeons have some kind of infectious something that is other than avian flu. In fact, having spoken with a state agency biologist about it a couple months ago, there are two other viral diseases in this and the next county over that they are monitoring. I had called to report that there was a location with a literal pile of dead birds. The eradication began a few days later. It's gross.

It will be interesting to see how little info we get from our government in Magatana these days. The legislature is in session trying to destroy the state again. They do this every two years. At least more Dems were elected so there's no magat super majority but it's small consolation since it's way too late to keep the magats from fucking up the entire regional ecosystem.

Don't know what the answers are anymore, just hope for something big to change things in a good way.

If you keep a small flock of chickens, you will see wild birds in the pens stealing their feed. This also brings them into contact with chickens, if any of the wild birds are sick, your chickens will be too. People need to change their ways of keeping chickens. They need to use fine mesh wire for the pens, like rabbit wire, so the wild birds can’t get into the pens and they need to be covered with tin or some kind of cover so when the birds fly over no dropping will fall into the pen.

Even people in cities in apartments and small homes could do a container garden. Some people in apartments could even keep a couple of chickens. There are small coops that are built for apartments, I would say you couldn’t keep a rooster though. They crow very early and that annoys people, who normally wouldn’t even notice. You don’t need a rooster to have eggs though. Hens lay eggs anyway, just not hatchable eggs.

A deadly bird flu outbreak has wreaked havoc on U.S. chicken farms, claiming the lives of over 20 million egg-laying chickens last quarter, marking the worst impact on America's egg supply since the outbreak began in 2022.

So the number is probably higher.

* in 2022 40 million chicken were killed.

* any new chicks hatched take 18-22 weeks before they lay an egg.

Stability in the market place is going to take months.

9. Flock Loss To Bird Flu
Sun Jan 26, 2025, 08:16 AM

is not something new. It's a common occurrence.

What makes it so devastating, is our egg production model maintains large flocks of birds together in relatively small spaces. You gain some economic benefit by scaling up but the flip side is the system can occasionally be subjected to catastrophic loss. I think I've seen it takes about 6 months to get a chick large enough to lay eggs.

There are some precautions farmers can take to prevent the spread but those measures cost more and may reduce egg yield. I remember seeing a piece about the differences between US and European chicken farms many years ago. Hygienic practices in Europe seemed much better than in the US but I'm not sure if this holds up today.

You'd think egg producers would adopt preventive measures to avoid catastrophic loss on their own but I suspect there's no real financial incentive to do so.

Egg prices in my neck of the woods were $6+/dozen at the grocery store and $4+/dozen at the local farmers market. The grocery store appears to be supplied from the Midwest, while the farmers market gets their eggs from more local sources. My wife's manager has chickens and used to sell them for $3.50/dozen. He didn't come in with any this week because he's selling all of what he has to his church members. BOTTOM LINE, SHOP AROUND FOR THE BEST PRICE.

In 2020, the average price of regular gasoline in the United States was $2.17 per gallon. This was a 17% decrease from 2019, and the lowest annual average since 2016

Explanation

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a reduction in passenger travel and demand for gasoline.
State-mandated stay-at-home orders and international travel restrictions also decreased fuel demand.
