Trump suggests we can do without any taxes -- just fund everything with tariffs

A woman's shout out at his Las Vegas rally today...

“She said no tax on anything,” Trump said. “How about just no taxes, period? We could do that.” The president then fondly recalled a time without a federal income tax and floated funding the US through tariffs:

You know, if the tariffs worked out, like a thing like that could happen if you want to know the truth. Years ago, 1872, 1913, we didn’t have an income tax. What we had is tariffs where foreign countries came in, and they stole our jobs, they stole our companies, they stole our product, they ripped off. And, you know, they used to do numbers.

And then we went to tariff, a tariff system. And the tariff system made so much money. It was when we were the richest from 1870 to 1930. Then we came in with the brilliantly came in with an income tax. So we don’t want others to pay. Let’s have our people pay. And then you had the depression in 1928, 1929, I call it 1929. It was a bad time. But, you know, you didn’t have tariffs, and you had tariffs that ended in 1913. But it was the richest our country ever was.

A tariff is basically a sales tax. People wouldn't like it so much if there was suddenly a 25% sales tax on eggs, no? Girard442 Saturday #4

Your expenses are a small fraction of your net worth unlike a person in the middle class or lower where most of their income goes towards food, rent and so on.

Yes, he’s right. The robber barons were the wealthiest then. Everyone else not so much. The Great Depression resulted from those wonderful times. Good grief. Maybe they do want to kill us.

Tariffs are hidden defacto sales taxes on retail goods. The American consumer pays the tariff hidden in the price of each and every consumer purchase of an import from a country djt declared a tariff imposed.

A 25% tariff on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China plus another 10% on China will cost the average American household $5,000.00 per calendar year.

China does not pay the tariff,.... American consumers do - it comes right out of their disposable income.

There is also a very high chance that American manufactured goods will see a steep increases in the price of goods on the retail shelves. They can up their pricing to just a little lower retail pricing of post tariff imposed on foreign goods.

The poorer and lower middle classes get slammed by this hidden sale tax on durable and nondurable retail goods

them they should be OUTSTANDING for stocks and other investments on Wall St. A Securities Transfer Excise Tax would be appropriate if I have to pay a tax at the grocery store or buying furniture or a vehicle.

Let’s go back to doing tariffs. 50% tariff on anything from China that’s branded Drumph. 100% tariff on Bibles. 150% tariff on Drumph Bibles. 2000% tariff on all investment dollars from the Middle East.
800% tariff on all social media owned by dweebs who claim they have “masculine energy “, 9 bazillion tariffs on steroids, Gawd tattoos, and trad wives videos.

How bout them numbers?
