No. In the U.S., it's a social and cultural recognition, not a legal one.

and is binding depending on the denomination of the house of worship and party affiliation of the executive doing the law enforcement.

Sanctuary literally means sacred space and predates Christianity. Goes back to Roman imperial law from the 4th century.

(4,517 posts)4. First, I am not a lawyer. In England, sanctuary laws were abolished with the Reformation. In the US, there has never
been a law supporting sanctuary to my knowledge . There has been a long standing policy that restricted Customs Enforcement agents (ICE) from arresting undocumented individuals at or near designate sensitive locations, such as places of worship, schools, hospitals, funerals, weddings, and public demonstrations.
The Trump administration plans to rescind this policy.
