Sanctuary literally means sacred space and predates Christianity. Goes back to Roman imperial law from the 4th century.

There has been a long standing policy that restricted Customs Enforcement agents (ICE) from arresting undocumented individuals at or near designate sensitive locations, such as places of worship, schools, hospitals, funerals, weddings, and public demonstrations.

The Trump administration plans to rescind this policy.
