What do you think about...black?
Tying black ribbons on trees?
On lapels? Around the wrist?
Or wreaths of black ribbon on doors?
I'm considering a black armband. I already wear black frequently but I usually do it with red or pink or blue as contrasting colors.

Yellow Ribbon
During the Iran hostage crisis, the yellow ribbon was used as a symbol of support for the hostages held at the United States embassy in Tehran.[5][8] In November 1979, a committee headed by Suzan E. Garrett of the Jaycees ladies service organization in Leitchfield, Kentucky organized a campaign to "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" around public trees as well as encouraging people to wear tied ribbons on lapels in support of the U.S. hostages being held in Iran. She was interviewed on ABC-TV by Ted Koppel on the newly created Nightline late-night news program and later by Peter Jennings for ABC's World News Tonight.
This symbolism continued and gained further recognition in December 1979, when Penelope Laingen, wife of Bruce Laingen who was the most senior foreign service officer being held hostage, tied a yellow ribbon around a tree on the lawn of her Maryland home. The ribbon primarily symbolized the resolve of the American people to win the hostages' safe release.[5] Yellow ribbons featured prominently in the celebrations of their return home in January 1981.
The yellow ribbon saw renewed popularity in the United States during the Gulf War in the early 1990s. It appeared along with the slogan "support our troops", in the form of yellow ribbons tied to trees, and countless other contexts.[5] It often had the implied meaning of "bring our troops home"[8] from the Desert Shield and Desert Storm troop deployments. It appeared again during the 2003 invasion of Iraq with similar meanings,[5] most prominently in the form of a yellow ribbon printed on magnetized material and displayed on the outside of automobiles.

(1,089 posts)A few of us got kicked out of school in the 8th grade for wear them.
Yellow seems to represent hope, while black signals resistance.

I was too shy in 8th grade to do anything that might get me in trouble.

(26,369 posts)The White Rose is a group that runs a stickering campaign to distribute disinformation and conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] Its name is an appropriation of that of the anti-Nazi White Rose group, to which it is unrelated.[2] Stickers distributed by the group include anti-vaccine and anti-mask messages, denials that the COVID-19 pandemic exists, and conspiracy theories about a New World Order.[3][4] Their tactics have been compared to those of the anti-immigration Hundred-Handers group.

(1,457 posts)There is a lot of associations with the use of the Black Ribbon that I found on-line that are appropriately like what we are now going through. Wikipedia has some references.

Also used in Anti-Soviet campaigns in the 80's.
I think that this is something that can go somewhere in our efforts to represent our current despair.

(26,369 posts)I didn't know about the use during Anti-Soviet campaigns!
Thanks for sharing this!

(3,394 posts)I think that black sends the wrong message - that we feel defeated in some way.
A color that's more positive and easier to see (black kind of disappears against tree bark).
Maybe aqua? The color of the sky and water - life, not black for death or mourning.
What is the color of hope?
littlemissmartypants
(26,369 posts)I did a search for that and green and yellow came up.
Maybe yellow ribbon would be better than black.
Afterall, we've used it before in solidarity as a nation united against a common foe.

Green and blue are also considered colors of hope - I started falling into the abyss of internet research!
I still like aqua - here's what I found in a simple google search:
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=what+does+the+colr+aqua+symbolize
I think we may want to have a color representative of what we want - peace, tranquility, reinvigoration- something positive - but that's my individual preference.
If somehow it becomes a true campaign, I'll tie whatever color ribbon is chosen.
