Trump launches savage attack on bishop who asked for ‘mercy’ for minorities
U.S. president calls the clergywoman a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater,” “ungracious,” “nasty” and “not compelling or smart.”
January 22, 2025 11:35 am CET
By Seb Starcevic

U.S. President Donald Trump hit out Wednesday at a bishop who directly called on him to show mercy to immigrants and LGBTQ+ people.

During the inaugural prayer service Tuesday at the Washington National Cathedral attended by Trump, Vice President JD Vance and their families, the Right Rev Mariann Budde delivered a sermon in which she appealed to Trump to be merciful to minorities, “some who fear for their lives.”

“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now,” Budde said, referring to “gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families.”

Most “immigrants are not criminals,” she added. “They pay taxes and are good neighbors.”

Disgrace must be what his parents called him growing up.

Today, his fractured ego and tiny mushroom of an id prevent him from cross-pollinating his go-to insults.

7. Trump is proving himself to be anti-Christian.
Wed Jan 22, 2025, 09:10 AM
Jan 22

I think he actually hates real Christians. The ones who follow the teachings of Jesus. Trump is the descendent of the Philistines who called for Jesus to be murdered in the name of protecting The People.

First, he didn't even try to pretend when he didn't even hover his hand over The Bible when he took his Oath of Office. His hand, wrist, and arm were hanging down by his side. Hey Donald! Did Satan tell you to do that?

Then he scowled at Rev Mariann Budde during her entreaties from The Pulpit. After the church service, he insulted her. Didn't say he didn't agree with everything. He denounced her and her brand of Christianity and the social justice that goes with it.

And overnight, Trump didn't hold back on his animosity and hatred towards Rev Budde. He hates her courage and integrity. If he could send some newly-released Proud Boys to visit her, he would.

Not only does this reveal Trump's false character as the "Defender of the Faith," but it also shows the religious hypocrisy of the power-hungry evangelical Christians. Namely Franklin Graham.

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

women tower over that puny, weak, petty loser. Two incredibly brave and righteous women!

The look on Trump's face was priceless.

They didn't see it coming and that makes it extra humiliating.

The bishop channeled the authentic Jesus message, totally unlike the reality show "men of God" charlatans hired at the inauguration on a MAGA version of their own DEI.

95. In the Episcopal Church, one of the baptismal vows is to "respect the dignity of every human being" . . .

. . . and every time a baptism takes place during a public service, the entire congregation reaffirms its commitment to those vows. It's something the Episcopal Church takes very seriously. In calling for compassion and mercy toward groups whose dignity Trump has not respected, and indeed has demeaned, Bp, Budde was acting in accordance with her own baptismal vows and consistent with her pastoral role as a bishop of the Episcopal Church. She has absolutely nothing to apologize for!

85. MaddowBlog-Following sermon, Trump and his allies target Episcopal bishop

Religion must be celebrated, protected and venerated, Trump apparently thinks — just so long as the faith community is telling him what he wants to hear.

Donald Trump is not often forced to listen to those who disagree with him, and when the newly inaugurated president is confronted with his critics, he tends to unravel. The Republican’s debate meltdowns, for example, have become the stuff of legend......

Hours later, shortly after midnight, the president abandoned subtlety and published a far more forceful rebuke to his social media platform. It read in its entirety:

The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!

There’s no point in fact-checking every error of fact and judgment in the president’s online harangue. The Rev. Edgar Budde is not a “so-called” bishop; there is no “giant crime wave”; Trump’s line about “mental institutions” has long been ridiculous, etc.....

Take a moment to imagine what would happen if a progressive House Democrat called for an American religious leader to be kicked out of the country for delivering a sermon he or she disagreed with.

What’s more, whether Republicans appreciate this or not, the more they whined about the bishop’s sermon, the more likely it became that the public would hear what Budde had to say. The Streisand Effect is, after all, a real phenomenon.

Let’s also not forget that for many congressional Republicans, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, there was a Biden-era “scandal” about officials targeting and harassing religious leaders. It was nonsense, of course, though it’s hard not to notice that these same GOP leaders have far less to say about their allies targeting Budde......

The post-inaugural national prayer service, however, shed light on the limits of the president’s approach: Religion must be celebrated, protected, respected and venerated, Trump apparently thinks — just so long as the faith community is telling him what he wants to hear.

I'm a practicing Episcopalian. I'm so proud one of my bishops had the courage to speak out when she had him as a captive audience. He can savage her, but many of the church will stand behind her. I hope priests all over America take her lead and do the same thing from the pulpit.

When you're born you get a ticket to the freak show. When you're born in America, you get a front row seat.

Sometimes he may speak up on this. Yeah, he’s Catholic, but he probably would have said the same thing to the dotard.
