I'm appalled, shocked, but can't say I'm completely surprised over the Nazi salute and the lack of ramifications there will be.
Furthermore, I don't appreciate people trying to make excuses that Elon is autistic or things along those lines.
Do you know why? Because I myself have been diagnosed as being on the spectrum, and I feel insulted and many others on the spectrum should be as well. It's not a get-out-of-jail free card.
While it's true we can't always read people, don't know social cues and aren't the greatest with interaction, I know better than to do the Nazi salute, or to insult someone over their sex, race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, physical and intellectual disabilities, etc. I'm guilty of having said inappropriate things in my life or how I said, sometimes knowingly, other times I didn't know or was aware until I said it, I'm in my thirties, and I would assume someone in their fifties, let alone the richest person on the planet, knows better.
Some things can be understood and excused when it comes to autistic people. If you know how to make billions, if you know how to buy companies, if you know how to buy a government, you know better than do the Nazi salute.
Furthermore, don't come up with the excuse the Romans did it first. The Nazis didn't invent the swastika, but what do we associate the swastika with? The Nazis.
Also, for my own sanity, I'm pretending President Biden is still in office, which I find to be healthier than sinking into depression and absorbing the toxicity of this insanity that is just beginning. Growing up in the 2000s, I managed to avoid most news to a tee as a kid when we had Bush, now if only I can pull it off with the felon and puppet master as an adult in a world of social media. The only reason I still use Twitter is because of my job.
But miss me with the autism excuse and that salute.

(63,019 posts)That because he is neurologically impaired he is allowed to use evil symbolism.
I have worked with many brain damaged people and not one of them was evil,
using Nazi symbols.

(4,812 posts)Autism can lead you misread a situation, miss a social cue, or impulsively try to communicate something in a way that ends up misinterpreted.
How you act when it's pointed out to you how others are interpreting what you said or did is about your character, not your neurodivergence.
I'm autistic as well. It's, as you say, not an excuse not to give a shit about the impact your words and actions might have on others.
I used to work in a supermarket when I was in college and it just felt better to punch in numbers on the keyboard using my middle finger. When someone pointed out to me that it sometimes looked like I was flipping the customers off, I apologized, explained that that wasn't my intent, and stopped doing it. Easy peasy.
Most autistic people build a social programme that they run in lieu of intuitively knowing how to handle social situations. Whether or not you are willing to accept feedback and tinker with and improve your programme is generally within your control and comes down to your attitude and values, at least when we're talking about people who are verbal and not intellectually disabled.

(65,563 posts)and it is certainly no excuse to be hateful or malicious like Musk is. I deal with a lot of social awkwardness and wanting to stick with people I know. Much different than Musk.

1. Intentionally did a full Nazi salute in support of the ideology.
2. Is too mentally deficient due to autism/asperger to know better.
3. Did so as a joke to cause controversy.
In all scenarios, he has no business being near govt.

Elon Musk is a piece of shit. It's a completely separate trait from his autism.

(4,812 posts)without their consent. There's a famous anatomical text book which is still being used where some of the illustrations were based in part on Nazi doctors experimenting on autistic kids because they didn't think they could feel pain.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-49294861
Almost 250,000 disabled people were killed by the Nazis in the name of "racial hygiene" because of what were perceived to be deficient genetics and many of those people were autistic.
If Elon know, understood, or cared about the history of his condition, the last thing he would be doing would be running around doing a Nazi salute. And that last picture and caption, while I see where they are coming from, is also pretty gross for people that are aware of that context.

(7,433 posts)I don't care what excuse he thinks will fly. He did a Nazi salute not once, but twice. The guy's a Nazi.
I read a little on how people were taught to do this salute. I also don't care about the origin of it. It's a Nazi salute. You see this salute. you recognize it as part of the most evil person on the planet at that time. If he thought he was swearing allegiance to rumpy, I got news for him. He's going to kiss his wealth goodbye. He's a full grown adult. What was interesting was how he did it once, then turned so those behind him could see him do it again. It was intentional, it was disgusting, and it wasn't funny. It wasn't a joke that no one else got.
The part about slapping his fist to his heart, is not part of the salute. Sticking your arm straight out in front of you at approximately a 45 degree angle with the hand straight out, palm facing down, is the salute. That's what he did. Twice.
No one cares? I wouldn't do business with him or anyone friendly to him. He thinks he can shrug it off? I am waiting to hear a reporter ask rumpy his opinion of it. Should be good.
