Its that time of year againthe World Economic Forum in Davos kicks off next week. Once again, global elites will gather to discuss a wide range of issues, conveniently sidestepping their own massive roles in tax avoidance and evasion.
2019 was the one and only time I attended the conference. For some reason, they never invited me back - was it something I said
? 🤔
Ever since attending Davos, I've been thinking about what we can do to make the rich pay their fair share, and today I want to share an idea + ask for your support.
I've recently co-founded an organization - the School for Moral Ambition - that helps people to pivot their career. We like to see ourselves as the Robin Hoods of Talent: taking away the talent from the big corporations, and giving it to the most important causes of our time. Weve already started two fellowships in Europe to fight climate change and Big Tobacco.
So here's our next idea: were currently exploring whether we can recruit a SWAT-team of 12 brilliant tax specialists, legal experts, policy wonks and campaigners to fight for tax justice and a global billionaires tax.
Last week, I received the feasibility study from our tax researchers about a possible Tax Justice Fellowship. Their conclusion? Yes, this could work. It will take a LOT of perseverance, and a long-term commitment, but it should be doable to make a substantial contribution.
Our main mission right now is to find the first funders of this fellowship. I'm donating everything I earn from my forthcoming book Moral Ambition to our movement, but we need more.
So, to everyone who believes in this cause: we need you. Every dollar and euro, like and share counts.
At an earlier conference Michael Dell asked the question "Name one country where a 70% marginal tax rate has actually worked?"
He replied with "In the United States in the 1950's"
