PODCAST
As Pam Bondi evades questions at her confirmation hearing about Trumps threats to target enemies, a former prosecutor explains what Bondi inadvertently demonstrated about whats really coming in 2025.
At her confirmation hearing Wednesday, Donald Trumps pick for attorney general, Pam Bondi, sought in some ways to project an apolitical aura. But Bondi also refused to answer direct questions about Trumps threats to prosecute enemies and dissembled about similar threats from Kash Patel, Trumps pick to head the FBI. All this accidentally revealed something important. Bondi could not say straight out that she wouldnt carry out Trumps corrupt designs, because saying that could disqualify her in his eyeswhich is itself the problem here. We talked to former prosecutor Mimi Rocah, who explains how Bondi exposed herself as an unreliable defender of the rule of lawand what that telegraphs about the coming hellscape of 2025. Listen to this episode here.

The New republic, July 30, 2024
Donald Trump has been desperate lately to distance himself from Project 2025, the Heritage Foundations radical plan to remake the federal government under his presidency. I have no idea who is behind it, he said in early July about the plan, which would replace thousands of federal workers with partisan loyalists, ban abortion, and disband the Department of Education. A couple of weeks later, he said of the people behind Project 2025, They are extreme, theyre seriously extreme, but I dont know anything about it.
But between those two denials, on July 15, Trump made a decision that undercuts his claim to have no knowledge of Project 2025: He picked Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate.
Vance has deep ties to the Heritage Foundation, and in particular to Kevin Roberts, who has been president of the right-wing think tank since 2021 and is the architect of Project 2025. Vance has praised Roberts for helping to turn the organization into the de facto institutional home of Trumpism and has endorsed elements of Project 2025. Vance is also the author of the foreword to Robertss upcoming book, Dawns Early Light, which The New Republic has obtained in full even though the books publisher, HarperCollinss Broadside Books, has apparently tried to suppress it amid the scrutiny of Project 2025 and Vances ties to Roberts.
The subtitle and cover of Robertss book were softened as scrutiny of the Trump campaigns ties to Project 2025 grew. The book, which is scheduled to be published on September 24, was originally announced with the subtitle Burning Down Washington to Save America and featured a match on the center of its cover. The subtitle is now Taking Back Washington to Save America, and the match is nowhere to be seen. Promotional language invoking conservatives on the warpath to burn down institutions like the FBI, the Department of Justice, and universities has also been removed or toned down, though it is still present in some sales pages.
But the inspiration for that extreme language can be found in Vances foreword, which ends with a call for followers to circle the wagons and load the muskets, and describes Robertss ideas as an essential weapon in the fights that lay [sic] ahead. (The New Republic downloaded Dawns Early Light earlier this month from NetGalley, which provides advance copies of books to reviewers and booksellers. Copies were removed from the platform earlier this month.)
SNIP...
Vances foreword is also, notably, a call for revolution. The old conservative movement argued if you just got government out of the way, natural forces would resolve problems, he writes. We are no longer in this situation and must take a different approach. That is where the muskets come in:

AG Bondi will work to put down all opposition to Trump and his Turd Reich. Then, shell lead the round-up of all who they dont need, like liberals, progressives, and anyone who believes in the Constitution over rule by King Puppet.

(3,632 posts)Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia, told Newsweek that Trump's presidency may accelerate the increasing politicization of the legal system.
"Trump 2.0 could exacerbate this dynamic, especially if the new President does much that he promised to do when campaigning and since he was elected."
"For example, the pledges to weaponize the DOJ and use it to prosecute his enemies and to pardon the January 6 defendants will not improve the federal legal system," he said.
In one of many cases in which Trump has vowed to jail political opponents, he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, in June, 2024 that he would hold "televised military tribunals" and would jail President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer and former Vice President Mike Pence, among others.

(18,631 posts)Whos Enabling Putins Enablers?
BY SAM PIZZIGATI
CounterPunch, March 29, 2022
Where would Vladimir Putin be without the Russian oligarchy? Without Russias oligarchs, political leaders of the Western world have concluded, Putin would be tottering. Western leaders have made squeezing Russias richest a central piece of their strategy to end Putins Ukraine cross-border assault.
These same Western leaders, unfortunately, have failed to take seriously what ought to be an equally pressing question: Where would Russias oligarchs be without the West, without the Wall Streeters, wealth managers, and assorted other high-finance riff-raff paid millions, as Institute for Policy Studies analyst Chuck Collins puts it, to help billionaires sequester trillions?
Western leaders have essentially been ignoring this question almost ever since the old Soviet Union collapsed. And now were paying the price. Those Ukraine sanctions against Russias oligarchs? They come with a huge loophole. The Western worlds opaque web of tax havens and anonymous corporations is essentially rendering much of those sanctions ineffective.

The U.S. wealth defense industry, we need to remember, hasnt just been helping Russian oligarchs hide their fortunes. Americas money-handlers have for years been helping them pile up ever grander fortunes. Theyve steered the illicit funds of Russian oligarchs into U.S. real estate, investment funds, and even factories, says Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jake Bernstein, a senior reporter on the 2016 bombshell Panama Papers tax avoidance exposé.
The Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has used a network of banks, law firms and advisers in multiple countries, the New York Times just reported, to invest billions in American hedge funds. Along the way, he tapped the expertise and contacts of U.S. high-finance giants ranging from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to BlackRock and the Carlyle Group.

And the richer they are, the more protected they will be. They paid for the destruction of democracy, justice and liberty -- in short, the U.S. Constitution. Proud to stand with you in the Good Fight, allegorical oracle.

(2,856 posts)I'm sure we can expect the same evasion from all of Trump's other nominees. They know what they have been selected for.
Let's not kid ourselves. Evasions on questions like "would you obey an order from the POTUS to use military power on American citizens" or "would you use the power of your office to exact revenge on politicians the POTUS does not like" amounts to a resounding YES, they would absolutely do that.

(35 posts)for cabinet positions can honestly be described as competent, knowledgeable, qualified, above-board, honest, experienced, unbiased and capable. All of them have the one quality he wants which is unquestioned loyalty to HIM, not the Constitution, and that alone makes them unworthy of the positions they seek, paid for by US, the taxpayers.
