Has the assimilation already begun?

California's Newsom will join GOP governors in raising flag for Trump inauguration

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom will join Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and some GOP governors around the country in directing U.S. flags be raised to full height on Inauguration Day.

Newsom’s spokesperson Izzy Gardon confirmed Wednesday that the governor would temporarily direct the raising of flags at the state Capitol in Sacramento for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Flags at the U.S. Capitol and at statehouses around the country have been lowered to half-staff in honor of the late former President Jimmy Carter.

Newsom, who has become a foil for Trump over the years, will need federal help as his state recovers from devastating wildfires that have killed more than two dozen people.

Trump has complained about American flags being flown at half-staff during his inauguration. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it,” he posted on his social media platform.

This is not Newsom's first rodeo. He's playing Trump to get California fire relief money. It's the same reason Zelensky met with Trump. It's the same reason Putin compliments Trump. If you need something from Trump, playing him is pretty easy and doesn't cost much, except maybe your dignity.

I fear Newsom is as beholden to them as many other California and national pols are. It makes my stomach sink, just as Schiff’s June abandonment of Biden did, just as my Senator Heinrich’s did. If the wealthy tech bros want something, they get it. I wonder if they aren’t pulling strings. No matter, I now consider Newsom untrustworthy.

Is there one? Are these things being done simply to shut up the Buffoon-Who-Won’t-Go-Away?

If I could see some strategy for it I might not mind. However, if the Governor of the State of California is waving the white flag, what little I can do to resist seems insignificant and futile. Self-destructive in a word.

This is close to being the straw for this camel.

I'm just tired that some of our elected officials of not having a spine.

Don't get me wrong, I have loved this guy since he was Mayor of San Francisco (a City BTW that has stood for something since Harvey Milk without backing down). I believe he just fell down that slippery slope head first.

If California falls, so does the nation. Is that hyperbole? Only time will tell.

Is yet another effect of the huge gap in understanding the stakes between the top few and the rest of us.

To them two years or even four years, is no big deal. They are going all-in on Trump being gone in that span. They individually have the resources to weather the chaos or at least they believe they do. They can last until whatever appears next.

I and millions like me, simply don’t. Depending on the breaks, I probably won’t last a year. So, will I be there having their backs in ‘26 or ‘28? As the magic eight ball says, it’s not looking promising.

Some spit and fire on their part would go a long way toward making it worth staying engaged. Otherwise, the message is YOYO. (You’re On Your Own) Once that switch is thrown, there’s no going back.

We have to survive for at least 2 years, and win an election to survive 2 more years and then win that election.
This is a one day thing that will cost Cali nothing. I would bet that Newsom has calculated his personal cost against the benefits his state needs, and concluded it's worth taking a hit from the purists who want him to be a kneejerking opposition leader. He still has a state to run.

As much as I loathe the man-baby getting his way:
Newsom has some big fish to fry, can't afford conflict, and as much as I liked Carter, the half-staff thing is, IMO, mere symbolism.
They can just lower the flag the next day.
