As Donald Trump prepares to once again assume the office of the presidency, a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll finds that, despite his claims of an "unprecedented and powerful mandate," Trump may have to be careful about how far he decides to go with what he wants to do.
More people hold an unfavorable than favorable view of him, most are against pardoning those convicted of attacking the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and they're split on whether to mass deport immigrants who are in the U.S. without legal status.
Perhaps most importantly, Americans have high expectations that their personal financial situations will improve under Trump, but more think tariffs will hurt rather than help the economy.
Trump has promised bold action, but, as the NPR poll shows, the politics may be tricky. Presidents often become vulnerable because of overreach. They tend to believe falsely that because they were elected, they have a mandate for everything on their agenda. Clearly, that's not the case.
"The opening round of the second term is not going well with the public," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted the survey of 1,387 adults. "Americans are not convinced of Trump's agenda pillars, including pardons and tariffs. Mass deportations are only getting mixed reviews."

(11,044 posts)He used his MAGA cult members to get to his position of power. And now like pawns on a chessboard they will be cast out as his hierarchy snickers at how stupid they were to put their freedom on the line for those who do not respect freedom but only want to destroy it. This whole election was an experiment in gaslighting and it showed that gaslighting does indeed work if there are enough gullible people to buy into it.

(71,052 posts).. tariffs won't necessarily help said billionaires & limiting the employment supply will definitely hurt them.
I think he's stuck between his big money backers & still needing red meat for the base.
But, the interests of those 2 camps are in conflict.

(11,044 posts)He will never run for president again. Either he will be gone when his 4 years are up or he will stay and elections will be nothing more than a meaningless facade. Or he will drop dead before the 4 years is up. But clearly he doesn't need his useless minions anymore so he doesn't need to please them and when push comes to shove he will side with the billionaires every time.

(3,698 posts)I do think people have very high expectations of the economy under Trump and if it fails to materialize things will get ugly sooner rather than later. Trump and Co. will juke the numbers, of course, because they are con artists and liars, but you can't fool people's pocketbooks.

(101 posts)How many times have we heard Trump promise to fix everything in 24 hours? From the Russian Ukranian war to the ACA and a host of others. How many times have we heard he has a "beautiful plan" to replace programs he doesn't like, but never provides details of what his various fixes contain. One thing is a constant, his new plans must benefit him financially. When will his naive followers wake up? He certainly knows how to keep his MAGA puppets engaged by keeping them fearful and angry in a one sided campaign of dividing Americans by using his perceived enemies as bait. It's sick.

(101 posts)Many of Biden's new initiatives will take time to fully integrate. Since many Americans have short memory attention spans, Trump will take credit for them while the growing right wing media outlets will support him and ignore the actual source of said programs.

(3,339 posts)Now that he's been elected, Trump doesn't have to care about egg prices any more. He has two agenda items: to skim off as much public money as he can for himself and his friends (including more tax cuts for the wealthy), and to get revenge on his alleged enemies.
That's it. Trump doesn't give two shits about all of that other "governing" stuff.

Not that Trump cares or gives a shit. His wall will be an environmental disaster for wildlife that need to migrate, as they have done for millions of years to find food, mates, etc. The border wall will end one of the keystone elements of wildlife survival, migration. Many endangered species will be affected, but obviously do you think Trump and his killer kids give a shit? They see beauty and bragging rights as a head of a dead animal hanging on their trophy kill room wall. Who hates dogs, Trump does. Man's best friend has been betrayed by Trump, that is one big reason why I hate him.
