It wasn't about "welfare queens."
It wasn't about "gays demand special rights."
It wasn't about "welfare on demand."
It wasn't about Willie Horton.
It wasn't about John Kerry's Purple Hearts.
It wasn't about Al Gore "inventing the internet."
It wasn't about woke.
It wasn't about affirmative action or busing.
It wasn't about Jimmy Carter and the rabbit.
And it wasn't about Tim Walz "lying about his military record."
If any of these trigger memories for you and make you mad, it's because that's what they were designed to do. Each of these - and more - were used deceitfully by the Republican Party in order to distract and anger voters into turning away from Democratic candidates.
Each time we allow the GOP to get away with this, we cede our strength and clarity to their strategy of confusion and finger pointing.
We need a new approach in the Democratic Party. No, we don't turn our backs on our commitment to equal rights. We don't get into pointless arguments over which group we'll throw under the bus to appease the monsters.
We need a disciplined, consistent message from ALL Democratic politicians.
When Tim Walz was falsely smeared, we needed every single Democratic figure to repeat the same message of outrage, day and night, over and over.
Repeat over and over.

(9,649 posts)Too much boot licking from them. People are turning them off and canceling out subscriptions.
I have completely migrated to the guardian and the Philadelphia inquirer and Bluesky and medias touch.
I used to have subscriptions to the wash post and the NYT. I dont watch cable news at all.i feel they are mostly GOP mouthpieces (obviously not Rachel or Lawrence or the msnbc good ones).
I agree with you about the fight. Dems are too dignified in their fight. We have gutter opponents who will use emergency funds as blackmail to support their agenda. Bullies only respond to those who hit them back. What do we have to lose since we are already in the minority and the GOP controls all branches.

(17,663 posts)as a general principle that when ANY member of ANY vulnerable group is attacked we defend them as if we ourselves had been attacked.
It so happens that right now the transgender community is on the front line. The one substack I didn't unsubscribe from is called "Erin in the Morning," a place for the transgender community to discuss the assault on them. I see in their words the bewilderment, the anger and the panic as they try to figure out the hundreds of new proposed laws against them, various new rules and regulations, to compare notes on getting their passports, etc...
As your post illustrates, the chosen out-group of the moment can change overnight.
We need to remain flexible, watch closely, and react swiftly however we can--and I understand that we cannot perform miracles. And at the very, very least we can bear witness and share what we have seen.

(6,847 posts)Also, the disruptions created by their efforts to do this just gives them even more fuel to turn the general public away from the real narrative and more into psychosis. As our great and powerful mushroom (Who I want to thank profusely for keeping us reminded that justice has been delayed and now is on track to be denied. This justice can take whatever form it wants, but the point is that it has not happened in any meaningful way, as true justice requires consequences) said (adjusted for current time and date): 'Five days remaining.'. Because, after that, we can kiss whatever was left of the rule of law, and the desire to 'promote the general welfare' (which is so fucking ironic given how much these rethugs love to quote the Constitution!). Then, all our infighting will have to stop as we will all be fighting for survival. That itself might just implode the entire party.
Or, we could just stop with the farting around and get our shit together now, right? Right??

(34,870 posts)it's about (1) increasing $$ for owners - ie billionaires who are greedy as heck and will push back on anything that helps us - o/t, workers rights, unions, etc. and (2) christian nationalism - project 2025 is going to be rammed down our throats because religion helps to control the masses.
the other stuff is wedges and theater.

(4,755 posts)It's just an invitation for those individuals to be characterized negatively and then by association, the entire Democratic party. I wonder if there is a solution to that. I just don't know what it is.

(14,576 posts)They will call anything socialism to influence the voters. In the 80's, Reagan and the Republicans made "liberal" a bad word and too many Democrats took the bait and ran from it. We need to focus on the policy and not the label.

(13,072 posts)Grover Norquist ran and probably still runs a weekly meeting of point people who receive the new talking points and immediately distribute it to their organizations and connections. These talking points are always lies or at least distortions but everyone is told what to say so they all speak in unison and by the time it gets out there, our side is always reacting and without a unified message. The DNC or some other central organization should get on top of this and distribute a consistent rebuttal that all the players can bring to the press conferences and talk shows. They could do this proactively too, highlighting accomplishments and initiatives, which they should've been doing throughout Biden's term, but they can also consistently illuminate the dangerous things the Trump people will be doing during the next four years. It's the consistency of a response simultaneously delivered by a broad group of players that makes people accept that an issue is really "a thing".
